ABOUT THE PROJECT
South Africa supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, yet many species face increasing pressure from habitat loss, environmental change, human activity and other emerging threats.
The Threatened Species Programme focuses on species of conservation concern where targeted intervention, monitoring and long-term conservation support can make a meaningful difference. Particular emphasis is placed on species connected to our landscapes, expertise and wider conservation partnerships.
Our work may include population and nest monitoring, threat assessment, habitat support, wildlife health surveillance, species-specific research and, where appropriate and properly authorised, conservation breeding and other recovery initiatives.
By working with conservation authorities, researchers, veterinarians, zoological institutions, landowners and specialist organisations, we aim to contribute to coordinated conservation efforts that strengthen the long-term future of priority species and the habitats on which they depend.
